Side Effects

Side effects are usually experienced if we move to quickly in detoxifying, or killing off yeast or bacteria or patients with silent reflux disease (no apparent symptoms).

Heartburn: Enzymes will not cause reflux disease. However, if you have a compromise in your stomach lining or silent reflux disease you may experience reflux or heartburn. If you do, discontinue the predigestive enzyme (the one before meals) (Pan, Bil, VSCLR, HCL, DGST) and call the office. We will adjust your program accordingly.

Gastric Bloating: Mild gastric bloating can be caused from restoring, normal gut bacteria or by killing off abnormal bacteria or yeast with the gut as long as it is not uncomfortable, it usually only lasts a few days.

If it is uncomfortable discontinue the related enzyme and call the doctor, this usually is related to yeast overgrowth and involves enzymes high in cellulase such as STM, SmI, and MSCLR.

Brain fog: this usually is caused from die off from yeast or bacteria and the release of toxins. This can also be caused from release of toxins stored in the soft tissue (fat tissue). This is usually mild and will last for 3-4 days. Making sure you have adequate water intake will help it flush the toxins from your system. If the symptoms persist call the office.

Patients on High Blood Pressure Medication

If you are on blood pressure medication the Enzyme Replacement Therapy can have positive effects for suffers of high blood pressure. Change in lowering blood pressure has been noted as early as three days after beginning therapy. Note: the side effects of lowering blood pressure when someone is already taking a medication to lower blood pressure is that the blood pressure will become too low giving symptoms of fatigue or dizziness. If you experience these symptoms, have your blood pressure checked. Your medical physician may need to lower or discontinue your medication. We make it a practice not to tell patients to discontinue a medication we leave that to the prescribing doctor.

Glucose control medication such as glucophage and insulin. With enzyme therapy the body will be better able to control its own blood sugar and the need for medication may be reduced or eliminated. The side effects are actually attributed to the medication as the dosage taken lowers the blood sugar too low. The prescribing physician may need to re-evaluate a dosage.
